Profile

Professor Emeritus Dato' Dr Syed Mohamed Aljunid is a distinguished Public Health Medicine Consultant and Professor of Health Economics, Policy and Management in the Department of Public Health Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He also serves as Professor of Community Medicine in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, IMU University. In November 2022 he was honoured with the title of Emeritus Professor in Public Health by UKM.

He was the first Malaysian to obtain a PhD in Health Economics and Financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, in 1995. He also holds an MD from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and a Master of Science in Public Health from the National University of Singapore.

With over 30 years of expertise in health policy, economics and financing research, he has held prominent positions including Founding Head of the International Centre for Casemix and Clinical Coding at the Faculty of Medicine, UKM, Senior Research Fellow at the United Nations University International Institute for Global Health, and Founding Chair of Health Policy and Management at the Faculty of Public Health, Kuwait University.

His international impact spans consultancy work for the WHO, World Bank, AUSAID, GIZ and the Asian Development Bank, contributing to the development and implementation of casemix systems and DRGs for provider payment methods in national health financing programmes across 20 countries. He was the developer of several DRG groupers, including MY-DRG, MY-CBG, UNU-CBG and INA-CBG. He is currently appointed by the Minister of Health Malaysia as a member of the National Committee for Implementation of DRGs for Provider Payment and the Technical Advisory Group for DRGs in the Ministry of Health.

He served as Co-chair of the Morbidity Technical Advisory Group for the ICD-11 Revision of the WHO Family of International Classifications from 2007-2016. He is the Founding President of the Malaysian Health Economics Association (MAHEA) and the Malaysian Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcome Research (MY-ISPOR).

With a publication record exceeding 300 journal articles, books, book chapters and scientific reports, over 350 presentations at local and international conferences, and more than 160,000 citations with an h-index of 88, he continues to be a leading figure in public health and health economics globally. He has conducted more than 55 research projects, supervised 50 PhD candidates and more than 200 Master's students, and is recognised as one of the top 2% most cited scientists by Stanford University (2025). His most recent book is "How much is the Cost of Coding Errors? A Study on Factors Influencing Quality of Clinical Coding in Implementation of Casemix System in Hospital Services."
